UK-SPEC professional registration is available for all practicing engineers and technicians who are capable of demonstrating the necessary standard of competence and commitment for the title they have chosen to apply for.

You can find the eligibility criteria for EngTech, IEng, and CEng by visiting the official UK-SPEC website. Those for ICTTech are in the ICTTech Standard.

No matter which pathway you choose for professional registration, the following are the steps you need to take:

  1. Join a professional engineering institution:

You need to join a professional engineering institution that must be licensed to assess candidates for professional engineering registration.

Alternatively, you can join a Professional Affiliate of the Engineering Council. Some of these organizations have agreements for registering their members by means of a licensed institution. One of the major benefits of joining an institution is the support the institution provides its members in working towards registration.

  1. Tell your institution about your desire for professional registration:

You should let your institution know that you want to apply for professional registration with the Engineering Council. Their staff will see your qualifications, experience and training. After that, they will advise you which title you may be eligible for and whether any additional learning or experience is needed. You may also find a mentor with their help.

  1. Record your professional development:

For the attainment and maintenance of professional registration with the Engineering Council, you must record your professional development. This way, you will have proof of your qualifications, activities and experience to draw on when you become ready to apply for your selected title.

  1. Assessment: the professional review:

The assessment process for registration is called the professional review. It starts when a written application, which may vary depending on the requirements of your institution. Your institution will give you all you need to know. For IEng and CEng registration, you also need to go through a professional review interview.

When your institution has verified that you fulfill the criteria as per the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence, they will submit a registration form to the Engineering Council on your behalf.

  1. Certification:

When the registration authority receives your registration form from your institution, it will verify and process your application. After that, you will be added to the national register. All this will take, in general cases, between one and three weeks. After that, you will get your registration pack, which includes a certificate, showing your new registration title.

After that, you will be able to use your post-nominal letters to show that you have achieved professional status. At this time, you can download the related logo to use on your business cards, email signature, and stationery.
